In November’s Heritage Newsletter, we referred to the Cart Barn adjacent to Lees Farm Cottages, Pyrford Road.
It is believed to have existed on the site since the 18th century and features on the 1841 Tithe map.
Although the building itself is not explicitly listed, it is within the curtilage of listed buildings and so has the protection of listed building legislation.
We were therefore concerned, this week, to see tiles being removed from the roof in what could have been the start of the removal of the building.
Thankfully, a senior planning enforcement officer from Woking Borough Council was able to visit the site the same day.
He confirmed that listed building consent would be required for any further work and will continue to monitor the situation.
The Pyrford Neighbourhood Forum works to protect our local environment, including its heritage and nature.
Steve Parkinson says
Was there any mention of where the timbers came from
Geoff Geaves says
Steve hi – we know very little about the history of the Cart Barn except that it appears on a Tithe Map for 1841. However if you look at the roof timbers of the barn they looked to me as though they might have been salvaged from 17th c. warship.. If we learn any more about the barn then it will definirely appear in the Newsletter and website.
