Look out for Warblers and Nightingales which are now returning and in late April the first cuckoos will appear.
The nesting season is now well underway. Blackbirds, Thrushes, Wrens, Tits, Robins, Nuthatches etc are all busy establishing the next generation.
Cock Pheasants are making their distinctive trumpet calls to attract the hens and establish their territory from other males nearby.
Moorhens and Coots are chasing each other around canals, rivers and ponds as they fight for territory. Kingfishers are pairing up and excavating burrows in riverbanks.
Flowers are springing up everywhere in fields, verges and hedgerows and trees are coming into leaf.
Towards the end of the month the first bluebells are emerging.
Things to do
- Put out food for birds – they have many more mouths to feed now and food supplies are still stretches especially if there is a late cold spell.
- Hedgehog awareness week (30/4/23 to 6/5/23). britishhedgehogs.org/uk for more details.
