Migrant birds are now very much in evidence everywhere with geese and other birds feeding in open fields an in the hedgerows.
Some of our more conspicuous birds such as Nuthatches & Dunnocks return to our gardens. The are often joined by Long-tailed Tits & Greenfinches or even Siskins and Redpolls.
Starlings are roosting in vast flocks and can be seen murmerating in vast numbers over open wetland/grassland areas.
Tawny Owls are also very vocal at this time of year as they get together with their familiar Twitt (female) Twoo (male) contact calls.
Things to do
- Put out food and water for birds especially if the ground is frozen.
Nuts & seeds are always welcome and fruit like old apples & pears too. If you’ve got any apples that are going over or you’ve managed to store some in the garden shed why not put them out on the lawn.
- Take afternoon walks along the River Wey to see Barn Owls hunting on its adjacent wetland areas.
- Takes a walk along the River Wey in the late afternoon where you might be lucky to see a starling murmeration.
