Trees are now losing their leaves or well on the turn with autumn well on its way.
Migration is now underway with birds leaving the cold northern climes to spend the winter further south where food is more plentiful and conditions less harsh during the colder months.
Look out for migrant visitors such as Redwings, Fieldfares, Thrushes & Blackbirds in your garden who will be looking for fallen apples or berries after flying here all the way from Iceland, Scandinavia & even Russia.
Migrant Wigeon, Teal and Pochard as well as various geese species may be present on lakes and rivers.
Sparrowhawks and Buzzards are fledging. Look for Sparrowhawks in the garden chasing garden birds. Kingfishers are hunting new territories along smaller streams and ponds.
Birds such as the Blackbird and Robin are singing loudly at dusk.
Things to do
- Put out food and water for birds. Nuts & seeds are always welcome and fruit like old apples & pears too.
- If you’ve got any apples that are going over or you’ve managed to store some in the garden shed why not put them out on the lawn for these beautiful birds. This could make the difference between life and death for some birds. Apples are a particular favourite of some of our migratory birds such as Redwings, Fieldfares & Thrushes who bring some welcome colour to our gardens in the dull winter months.
- Create a log-pile or two in the garden or better still create a hedgehog hotel or install a hedgehog box for the forthcoming hibernation.
