Pyrford Wilding Project

6th May 2020 by Geoff Geaves 2 Comments

Since taking ownership in 2004 Joy and Akeel have added to the property and recently acquired 100 acres around the house.  This consolidates Peatmoor Wood with land between Pyrford Road, the Wey Navigation Canal and the Pyrford Marina up as far as Dodd’s Bridge.  Both Joy and Akeel have a passion for nature and plan to hold the land for ‘wilding’.  Currently they are planting a hawthorn hedge to mark their boundary across the old Twisted Stone property.  They note that in the 3 months they have owned the land there has been a noticeable increase in sightings of deer, teal ducks, lesser, greater spotted and green woodpeckers.  A barn owl is also calling at night and there is a wonderful flock of starlings on the property.

I am a landscape architect living in Hare Hill Close, and am so delighted that they are doing this, the success of which will rely on a 5-10 year management plan with prescribed operations to be carried out according to a maintenance schedule which should be reviewed annually to adjust according to the successes and failures of some of the initiatives. I have offered my consultancy services to the family but can also recommend an ecologist if they require one.
